Rimworld is an isometric colony simulation that has management concepts and basics. The game has wide array of sophisticated mechanics which will immerse the player into its world. It has been developed by an indie company called Ludeon Studios. They made an amazing job to create a space simulation that you can delve through its secrets.
The game’s lore is extensive and 3 space travelers crash-landed from a drop ship onto an alien planet filled with xenos, tribesmen, space pirates, giant bugs, and more. These space travelers plan to create a spaceship to continue their journey. This is a game where you can create a merchant colony that harvests organs from tribal cannibal raiders. You can create a society that eats human-sized insects and worships Xenos. Do you want to create an army full of robots and exterminate all life on the planet? You can do even better and turn your colonists into machines and their brains into artificial intelligence and more. You can do almost everything you can imagine in this brilliant simulation.
Furthermore, if we add the mods created by the community to the already vast possibilities that Rimworld offers us, it becomes impossible to write down what you can do in this game. Trust me when i say there are thousands of mods for this game with different mechanics added thanks to game’s amazing mod support.
I’ve been playing this game off and on for about 8 years, and I can easily say it tells a story than a game. You can even choose your own AI storyteller before you start, which affects the order, frequency and severity of events. From scratch to spacetech, it tells you a story of a colony which hassles through countless raids and disasters. The AI storyteller that you pick throws incidents on your face from day 1. But don’t worry, as these events are not always bad. One day you may wake up to a friendly merchant on your walls selling the wool parkas you desperately seek for the following winter. On another day, you may see a toxic gas covering the area and lasting for unknown seasons which means your plants are dead for sure.
There are tons of events that occur throughout your playtime, and they get harder as your colony gets stronger. You feed your colonists. You marry them. You build them shelters inside mountain caves if you want. You get them ready for possible space cannibal raids. You will watch them die. Still, don’t worry! You can resurrect them with resurrector mech serum. The difficulties and losses you experience become so deep that you can forget your main goal, which was to build a spaceship, in most parts of the game.
All these features and content may sound really cool to play with your friends but sadly they still could not implement multiplayer as a core feature. This is the biggest drawback I could see in my playtime. Yet there are several fan-made mods that allow you to experience this brilliant simulator with your buddies. Another drawback you might experience comes with the mods you installed to enhance your gameplay. Most of the mods including the multiplayer mod causes weird bugs and incompatibility issues which wastes your time and gets more annoying as you install more mods.
Overall Rimworld is a fantastic way to go through an adventure in a world full of muffalo and alien bugs. And the developers have been working hard since the initial release of the game and this keeps the game to have such a big community and ever increasing content made by both developers and the community itself. If you are to try out this masterpiece remember to watch out for small fires. Fire tends to spread quickly. Especially if most of your buildings are made of wood. Trust me.
